EIA, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, had been offering an Energy Kids Page to make energy issues accessible to kids. Though it was a popular resource, the outdated design was holding it back. The website was unstructured, which deterred users from exploring. And apart from a few graphics, like the Energy Ant mascot, the design wasn’t conveying that this was a space for young people. Threespot began by fine-tuning the content organization by adding a global navigation and user-friendly layout. Our illustrators also gave Energy Ant a head-to-toe makeover, swapping out his 70s turtleneck for a modern hoodie and his elfin boots for high-tops. EIA’s content is now framed in an eye-catching design that lives up to its lighthearted yet informative tone. The website was recognized as one of the region's best examples of web design by the AIGA 50.
